Happy Pijama Day!

Morning circle time – we had our special helper of the day adding the date to our calendar and leading us in our morning songs. Then we shared something we did over the weekend.

Snack – JKs were encouraged to eat a healthy snack.

Language  - Today JKs were introduced to read short words by first separating (segmenting) each sound and then blending them together. When beginning readers sound out words, they slowly say each sound in a word (c-a-t), and then say the sounds quickly together to "read" the word (cat). In reading, teachers call this blending because sounds are being blended together. Blending (combining sounds) and segmenting (separating sounds) are skills that are necessary for learning to read.
Developing a child's phonological awareness is an important part of developing a reader. Many research studies indicate that kids who have weak phonological awareness also have weak reading skills. In term 1 and 2 we focused on a letter per week and learned its name, sound and formation. Now, moving forward, JKs will focus on segmenting and blending. I'll be sending a package home to practice during the break.

Math – this week we are dedicating our math time to review the units we had in term 2 (Patterning and Geometry).
UOI - during our UOI we spent some time learning about some basic road safety signs. Today we made a traffic light. And then played a game following the traffic light rules.
